Our Impact

Humanity House has supported the Allen County Community since 2016 and has seen increasing food insecurity as food prices have gone up and SNAP funds reduced. In 2023, Humanity House distributed 50,000+ pounds of food to people experiencing food insecurity. The requests for support continued to rise requiring an increase in distribution of more than 15% in the first quarter of this year. If this trend continues, Humanity House can expect distribution to increase to 58,000 - 60,000 pounds of food in 2024.

Food insecurity effects 44 million people in America; 13 million of whom are children, according to recent information from Feeding America. 100% of US counties have people experiencing food insecurity.

Allen County has higher hunger rates because, as Feeding America reports, “Hunger is a problem in every part of the United States. But it is more common in rural areas. Rural areas comprise less than two-thirds of all U.S. counties, but 9 out of 10 counties with the highest food insecurity rates are rural.”

Humanity House combats hunger by growing fresh vegetable in our community garden, through the Kansas Food Bank and by purchasing in local stores. We have received a few small grants, but the majority of the food is purchased from money donated by those that support our mission.

Feeding America’s 2021 website figures estimate that Allen County has a food insecurity rate of 11.9%. Neighboring Bourbon and Woodson Counties have similar ratings, while Neosho County shows an increased rating of 12.4%, Wilson County 12.9% and Crawford County 13.6%. This means that in Allen County in 2021, 1,490 people experienced food insecurity. Humanity House served approximately 1,974 people in 2021, some of whom may have been from another county or needed food but were not below the SNAP threshold of 130% of poverty.

Humanity House takes pride in knowing that we have touched this many people and been able to support them through times of food insecurity. We believe that this indicates we have made a significant impact in addressing Allen County’s need for food.

To those who donate to Humanity House, we express our gratitude for allowing us to be an extension of your desire to address food insecurity in our community.
