“They helped me through the toughest times in my life.”
Stephen’s Story
A few years ago, Stephen was headed down a negative path. He had become addicted to substances and began to give up, even considering taking his own life. “I decided to give Southeast Kansas Mental Health a call before I took my life. I mean, I had nothing. I was living here and there. I had lost hope and didn’t care,” he shared.
Stephen was able to get hired by the SER Pro-gram to work with Tracy in the garden. He shared that he and Tracy worked well together, and he kept his job in the garden for about a year. He then broke his hip.
Stephen had known Georgia as his school-teacher years prior. “Georgia and Tracy brought me food and helped me pay for my utilities. I would have never made it without their support. They kept my job in the garden for me,” he explained.
Stephen talked about getting in trouble with the law and going to substance use treatment. “When I came back, I was able to start work back in the garden the next day! I got into the Recovery House.” He began working on his community service requirements by volunteering at the courthouse. His efforts during community service and his work ethic earned him a recommendation for a job at the county landfill.
Georgia and Tracy became the safety net Stephen needed to meet his needs and provide encouragement. “Their support and my relationship with God had a lot to do with how my life turned out today. They helped me through the toughest times in my life.”
Today, Stephen has a home of his own and has been drug free for more than 2 years. He has been consistently employed for over a year and a half and loves his job. He still attends NA meetings and goes to church regularly to continue to receive support for his life of recovery.
Humanity House Foundation congratulates Stephen C. for his success through a very difficult journey. Keep up the good work!
